We are moving in together! What do we need to consider so that the move-in goes smoothly?
At the beginning of a relationship, it is still completely normal for each of the parties involved to have their own apartment. In the course of the preceding time, however, the desire to be able to share one’s own four walls with one’s partner and not only to spend more free time together, but also to live together, is usually expressed. So that this decision does not turn into a negative experience after a short time, we have summarized some tips for you here for your move-in.

Tip 1: Which apartment suits us?
If you are 100% sure about moving in together, you can now start looking for an apartment together. The new domicile should meet all the needs of both parties as far as possible. For example, the connection to the public transport network, the way to work, the monthly fixed costs and the habitable size as well as the environment play a decisive role.
Tip 2: Making a compromise does not mean giving in!
Among other things, be prepared to have to make compromises, otherwise any disputes that arise could quickly shake your relationship. For example, allow him to install his beloved game console in the living room if you can spread out your handicrafts in the study.
We all know that you have to make compromises in a relationship, but sometimes you realize this too late when you first share an apartment. Not least because you don’t think about the fact that the shared apartment is also part of the relationship.
Tip 3: The budget!
Since the two of you need a little more space than in your single apartment, but still do not need twice as much living space, you should not simply add up the two previously paid monthly rents and choose your new apartment based on the calculated sum.
As a small rule of thumb: The sum of the two previously paid monthly rents minus at least 25% deduction is roughly what you can spend on your new apartment. Because the difference to the previously added sum is in turn needed for the additional costs for electricity and water as well as household-related expenses. Remember, as a couple you not only need more space, but also more electricity, water and food!
Tip 4: What should be considered when setting up together?
Since you both already had or still have your own apartment, each of you brings your own or complete household effects, including various pieces of furniture. Here the question arises, what do you really need from the respective items?
The same applies here: In order to avoid differences, it is important to show mutual tolerance and to make compromises.
For the one who is reluctant to stand in the kitchen and cooks out of necessity, all kitchen utensils will only be half as valuable as his beloved game console. For others who like to be in the kitchen in their free time, these will be indispensable. However, the one would much rather do without the other’s game console.
Tip 5: Where to put the duplicate items?
If one or the other item does not find a place in your new apartment, it does not immediately mean that it has to be disposed of. In addition to the furnishings and pieces of furniture that you would like to keep for emotional reasons, there are also items that you can gradually sell and thus improve your household budget for new purchases.
There are numerous ways to keep your belongings safe and dry today. In addition to your own basement or your own attic, you can also rent a suitable self-storage room for little money. In such self-storage warehouses, you can rent your personal storage room, which can be locked with your own lock, for a foreseeable future. Only the two of you have access to this.
Our conclusion!
For your relationship, the first shared apartment is usually an adventure and a test of endurance all rolled into one. Talk to each other and compromise. And if you still don’t have enough space for your beloved items, rent a suitable self-storage room.
