Live generously in less than 40 square meters of living space
Not least because of the steadily rising property prices and the high construction costs incurred for owning a home, many people can no longer afford their own home these days. In order to save costs and building space, the idea for the “tiny house” arose. But what is a tiny house really and what are its advantages and disadvantages? In today’s blog article we will get to the bottom of exactly these questions.

The tiny house and its remarkable features
It is well known that “a little is more”. This saying can be applied literally to the tiny house. As the name suggests, the tiny house is a small but nice little house with no more than 40 square meters of living space
Since there is very little living space in such a tiny house, all the elements built into it are perfectly coordinated and some are equipped with extra functions, such as the table, which can be converted into a bed in no time at all.
Now you might think: 200 years ago you probably lived in less living space than today, so nothing new with these tiny houses. It is true that people used to get by with less living space. What has changed, however, is the construction. Due to the further developments in terms of insulation materials, heating techniques or coatings of materials, it is now easier to build a small house that will last for many years despite exposed to the weather. So today you can build a tiny house with minimal wall thicknesses that still insulate well, or a minimally small heating system, possibly combined with solar cells, that still produces a cozy warmth.
The different tiny house types
It rolls well on four wheels – comparable to a caravan, the tiny house is also available on wheels. Installed on a trailer, you can easily redeem this as a trailer, i.e. caravan, at the road traffic office. With a powerful car, moving is no problem either.
A foundation that lasts for a long time – in addition to the mobile caravan version, the tiny house is also available with a solid foundation. Except for its size, it looks confusingly similar to the other houses.
What makes the tiny house so popular?
Cheaper construction – One of the biggest and most pocket-friendly advantages of this mini home is the less expensive construction. Compared to a conventional and traditionally built house, the construction and maintenance costs of a tiny house are significantly lower.
The main problem is the building site – a tiny house usually has a floor space of about 30 square meters. So what size of property would you need to live in a tiny house on your own property? A plot of land of around 200 square meters should be enough to build a tiny house on your own plot, including all the necessary boundary distances. But there is a problem here: plots of land with an area of less than 400 square meters are very rarely offered. So you would have to buy a plot of land with a friendly tiny house owner and subdivide it.
A plus in terms of sustainability – since the tiny house uses far fewer building materials compared to traditional house construction, significantly less CO2 is emitted and at the same time something good is done for the environment.
Keeping clean made easy – every housewife and househusband knows it – an apartment with 100 square meters of living space is not just cleaned in 2 hours. A tiny house with just 40 square meters makes it a lot easier.
In which points is the tiny house simply behind?
Family friendliness – For a short vacation in a small space it is still acceptable. However, to accommodate family, bag and baggage in the long term, the tiny house and its maximum 40 square meters of living space is definitely not a long-term living option.
Limited accessibility – Since there are only very small and narrow corridors due to the optimal use of space, the tiny house is anything but barrier-free. Let’s think of all the people who are dependent on a wheelchair or a walker. This limitation makes going to the toilet a real adventure every day.
When minimalism takes hold – By making a conscious decision to spend your life in a tiny house in the future, you are 100% in agreement with parting with a large part of your beloved belongings and keeping your belongings to a minimum .
Is the tiny house the future of living and does it help us to compensate for the chronic lack of space?
If you decide to live outside the norm, you still have to follow the rules. A mobile tiny house, for example, must comply with the local road ordinances. If this is not the case, it must be laboriously loaded onto a truck when moving and unloaded at the new place of residence. There can then no longer be any talk of a cheaper way of life.
There is also a lot to consider when it comes to sustainability. Here it is very much up to the residents to keep their tiny house in good shape and not let it be run down by wind and weather.
All in all, you have less living space in a tiny house than with today’s modern, perhaps sometimes a bit wasteful construction methods. People who need a lot of space or suffer from claustrophobia should not think too long about this type of living. For everyone else, it’s definitely worth considering. For those who don’t need many things to live, who want to save energy, for whom independence is important, but don’t have the budget to buy their own house with a large lot – for those, living in a tiny house can be a real option. And last but not least, people who are flexible, freedom-loving and location-independent will appreciate the tiny house form of living, because you can move with such a small house at any time, in terms of: here today, there tomorrow. Finally, questioning norms and habits broadens one’s own horizon. And who knows, maybe one or the other person will be happier after moving into a tiny house than before in a big house. You’ll never know until you try.
