Effective tips against the home office tantrum

For more than a year now, the corona pandemic has been accompanying us not only in everyday life, professional life is no longer what it used to be. Many of us get up in the morning as usual, get ready for work, and then sit in front of our computer. In the past, you would have walked out your front door, got in your car and driven to work. Today, however, our everyday work looks very different. So that we don’t fall on our heads at home, we have summarized some useful tips for you against the home office tantrum.

Effective tips against the home office tantrum

Set up your workplace the way you need it for comfortable work

Due to the corona pandemic that accompanies us every day, many of us suddenly got another job. For one it is the kitchen table and for the other the lovingly furnished desk. An upheaval like this gives us the opportunity to reflect – what do I need to be able to concentrate and work productively from home and to feel comfortable?

The new situation is the perfect time to think about this very issue. Because in the home office you have the opportunity to create a working environment that is tailored just for you.

Routines help to make your everyday work successful

What habit do you start your day with? Even in the home office, when we don’t leave our own four walls to work, it’s important to start the day the same way you would otherwise do when you leave the house.

Take time in the morning to eat breakfast, exercise, walk the dog, or whatever you usually do in the morning. Under no circumstances should you stumble from the edge of the bed directly to the desk.

Now that you have found a suitable morning routine for yourself, the next question arises – how do you usually start your working day?

In order to incorporate fixed rituals here as well, you should sit down for a few minutes and think about which rituals or tasks you could start your working day with in the morning. To get the feeling that you are on your way to work, you could, for example, take a short walk through the apartment, on the balcony or around the house before starting work. This is how you symbolically make your way to work and at the same time get your circulation going.

The same applies to the end of work. Since the physical separation between the workplace and the home office is abolished when working from home, a ritual also helps to end your working day successfully and with a good feeling. Tip: Shut down your laptop or computer every night and tidy up your workspace as if you were in the office.

Clear rules prevent distraction

You’d think you’d be safe from distractions at home. But beware! This is where the small and nasty distractions lurk around every corner. If you live in a shared apartment, you should clearly inform your roommates about when and how long you will be working and that they should not bother you. In this way you prevent a disruption to your workflow.

Washing clothes in between – is that possible? Small household things are best done before or after work. The fewer interruptions, the more likely you are to get into a flow. If there are too many interruptions, there is a risk that you will end up feeling like you worked 12 hours and still didn’t get everything done.

Working from home doesn’t mean being lonely

In the office it is easy to keep in touch with your work colleagues. Thanks to video calls, telephone calls and group chats, this is also possible in the home office. For example, you could arrange a video call in small or larger groups daily or weekly at a certain time (e.g. the daily break).

Conscious breaks create new strength for new tasks

Taking a break in the home office – how is that supposed to work? Just like you would do in the office. Take a targeted lunch break of at least 30 minutes in which you consciously leave your workplace, eat something and maybe walk a little around the house.

Stay positive – in most jobs, productivity is higher when working from home than in the office

But aren’t you totally unproductive in the home office? Quite the opposite – in the four walls at home, productivity can be up to 19% higher than in the office. Even 83% of companies that offer their employees home office say that productivity has increased significantly after the introduction of working from home.

In addition, the saved travel distance is another positive side effect of the home office. For example, you have significantly more time for yourself, your hobbies, your partner, your family and your children. The fact that you are currently not working in an office can have a positive effect on your quality of life.

Home office with children or family members in need of care – yes, that’s possible!

As in every company, there are employees everywhere with wives, husbands and children at home. Children who are at home 24/7 now need a lot of attention. Discussions and meetings are completely new territory for them. We can try to explain to them when we have time for them, but more often than not they want something from us at precisely those times when we don’t have time for them because of our jobs.

It is precisely for this reason that it is very clear that parents with children are doing one of the most important jobs here. Of course, this also applies to everyone else who has to look after their relatives of all ages, since they would not be able to get through everyday life without outside help.

But what is the most important thing with all the tasks? Prioritize your tasks and know that you probably won’t get everything done. The constant weighing of what is really more important now guides you through the crisis like a compass.

And the most important thing at the end – appreciate the quality time you get to spend with your children. Because one thing is very clear – children appreciate all the love and attention they can get. Even the little ones understand what appreciation means. So sit down together in the evening after work is done and write down together what you have experienced today and plan the activities for the coming days at the same time.

Conclusion:

  • Set up your workplace in such a way that you feel comfortable, can work comfortably and be productive.
  • Routines help you to structure your everyday work, to start full of energy and to relax in the evening.
  • Clear rules prevent distraction and disruption of the workflow.
  • You stay in touch with your work colleagues through video calls, group chats and telephone calls.
  • Conscious breaks give you new strength for demanding tasks.
  • In the four walls at home, your productivity can be up to 19% higher than in the office.
  • Home office is also possible with children and family members in need of care.
