More time for yourself
Online everywhere but not really present – day in and day out we get dozens of e-mails, messages and push notifications from social media. Take the planning of your everyday life back into your own hands and don’t let the news influence you. So that your everyday life can benefit from more relaxation and free time, we have summarized 10 great tips on the subject of digital detox and its successful implementation below.

(Would you like to learn more about the topic? Then we definitely recommend that you also read our first blog article on the topic “Digital detox – simply switch off”).
TIP 1: Every beginning is difficult, so let’s start with one mobile-free day per week
One of the most successful ways to digitally detox involves setting up an offline day. No matter what you do on this day, it should pass without the help of your smartphone and other digital devices. At first, hours seem like months. But once you get used to it, it will become easier for you to get by without your digital devices every day.
TIP 2: As in an airplane, it now says “flight mode on”
In order not to be interrupted by incoming messages or thrown out of the flow, it makes sense not only to use flight mode high in the clouds, but also with both feet on the ground. The temporary unavailability reduces the risk of distraction. Don’t worry, your messages won’t be lost. After disabling flight mode, your phone will vibrate or ring non-stop again.
TIP 3: My bedroom becomes an “offline zone”
The use of cell phones as an alarm clock is extremely important to a large part of the population. After the wake-up call in the morning, however, it is often not just about deactivating the signal tone. Many of us grab the opportunity right away and swipe through your social media accounts for a few more minutes. In order to escape the temptation to reach for your smartphone before the signal sounds, it is advisable not to take it into the bedroom in the first place. Declare your bedroom a cell phone-free zone and find out what it means to have a relaxed and deep sleep.
TIP 4: Less push notifications, less distraction
In order not to be disturbed unnecessarily often with vibrations and signal tones, it is advisable to reduce push notifications to the essentials. Whether it’s Instagram, Snapchat, e-mail, or gaming, they’re all designed to grab as much attention as possible. Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to turn off all notifications. Digital detox does not mean having to do without smartphones and the like completely, but rather dealing with them more consciously.
TIP 5: Actively address social pressure
In the past, people often complained about sitting on the phone too much. Today, on the other hand, we are complaining about not answering right away. Dare and speak up. It is often not only the internal pressure of being able to miss something, but also the external pressure of not responding quickly enough that exposes us to enormous stress.
TIP 6: I’m fine even if I consciously put my cell phone away
Try not only to create a cell phone-free space, but also a cell phone-free time. Consciously take several minutes a day to avoid sitting at digital devices. So you can relax a little before you go to bed and give your body a little break.
TIP 7: Today I’m leaving the house without you
Yes, you’ve read that correctly. Just leave your cell phone at home for a day or a few hours. Now that may sound pretty spooky, but it’s not as bad as it probably sounds to you right now. Your cell phone is at least as good at home as it is in your pocket. You will notice the big difference when you once again enjoy your life just for yourself and don’t have to have hundreds of followers with you.
TIP 8: Limits and fixed usage times make life easier
As the saying goes, “rules are made to be broken” but that doesn’t apply to this rule! So that you don’t fall back into old patterns at the end of the day, it is important to define clear limits and usage times. For example, you can set a time limit of one hour for completing your tasks and maintaining your social media accounts, or a fixed period of time from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
TIP 9: There are no cell phones in company
When meeting friends and family, the smartphone has no place on the table. A conversation without distractions is far more valuable than being constantly interrupted by vibrations and beeps. Social connections make us happy, but only if you take the time for them.
TIP 10: It’s time for analogue alternatives
Back to the analogue everyday helpers – with so much contact, it is not surprising that we feel completely lost without a cell phone. There are hardly any situations where we don’t have it with us. But this was not always the case. Before cell phones first appeared, people could get along without their help. You want to know how that worked? The best thing to do is ask your grandparents about it. It is important that you know that there are analogue alternatives for at least half of the apps used every day. For example, there are printed maps for the Android and IOS maps app. There is letter mail and a dictionary for Whatsapp and vocabulary. There are photographers and notepads for selfies and digital shopping lists. Were these not enough examples for you? Ask your grandparents, your parents, or just go out into the world and keep your eyes open – you will see that you can also live without being in the digital world all the time.
