Rent a warehouse instead of storing it in the basement
Thefts in basement compartments are increasing. Just recently on October 29th, 2018 Blick reports online about professional gangs of thieves who are clearing out cellar compartments in a targeted manner . The gangs are after the valuable items: bicycles, electronics, wines.
The statistics clearly say: burglaries in basement compartments are increasing. In the canton of Zurich, for example, 442 cellar compartments were broken into in 2016, and a year later there were already 686 cellar compartments. And those are just the reported cases. The number of unreported cases should not be underestimated. It can also happen that the burglary in the basement compartment has not yet been noticed, for example if you haven’t been in your own basement compartment for months.
You like to store your furniture, some of your household effects, chairs, tables, garden tools, but also valuable things such as carpets, electronics or bicycles and mopeds in the basement compartment. Once out of sight, things are quickly out of mind. They ended up putting a padlock on it. After all, not everyone has access to the basement compartments, only the tenants.
Especially in apartment buildings, most tenants feel safe as soon as they lock the basement door. But caution should be exercised here: hasn’t every one of us experienced how a garage door can be opened!? You have a push button that opens the garage door via a sensor. You drive your car into the garage and the garage door closes again after a few seconds. In the time it takes for the door to close, however, it is also easy to break into the garage. Or the caretaker ventilates the stairwell, leaving the front door wide open for several minutes. It is easy for professional thieves to break into the building during this time.
Once the thieves are in the house, the walk to the basement and the basement compartments is usually short. One enters the compartments through a door, which is often not locked. The wooden sticks and the locking mechanisms are burglar-proof in very few cases. Then the thieves have a lot of time to find the valuable objects in cellar compartments and to help themselves in peace.
But how can you protect your household effects that you store in the basement ? A high-quality padlock is certainly the simplest option. The problem with this is that the basement compartments themselves are mostly made of wooden sticks, which are then also easy to saw through or kick in. A burglar-proof door to the basement would be another way to protect your basement compartment. However, this is difficult to implement in most residential buildings, since the administration has to install such a door.
As the administration itself, you still have the option of installing alarm systems and video surveillance. However, these are expensive and must be operated / monitored accordingly, otherwise they will not serve their purpose. Or you can install burglar-proof basement compartment systems – these are expensive and are not implemented by most multi-family owners.
Probably the safest option to protect your belongings from gangs of thieves is to move your basement storage unit to a nearby self-storage facility.
