What are coworking spaces and who are they suitable for?
The ongoing process of digitalization is bringing about numerous changes in our working environment. Thanks to the mobile Internet, modern conferencing solutions and the latest technological developments, location-independent and flexible working is already possible in many industries today.
Anyone who deals with the new forms of work has certainly come across the term “coworking spaces”. But what is coworking and who is it suitable for?
Because it is certainly more than just a shared office – it is location-independent, flexible working in the community.

Coworking Spaces – What is it?
Coworking means nothing more than “working together”. This newly created and already widespread form of work describes a flexible workplace in an open-plan office where a wide variety of companies and people meet to work.
Unlike in a shared office, a business center or a temporary office, there is a greater exchange of ideas and suggestions for each other – a coworking space is somehow more social. Typical of this way of working are large, bright and open workspaces such as lofts, formerly converted factory buildings or open-plan offices with various workspaces.
The development of coworking spaces
The first coworking spaces or coworking offices emerged in the early 2000s in California (USA) and Europe. Especially in big cities, where offices are very expensive and there is only little space, coworking spaces are springing up like mushrooms. In Switzerland alone there will be more than 185 coworking spaces and 12,000 coworkers in 2020.
What makes a coworking space so special?
A coworking space is a kind of open-plan office where not only several people from the same company, but also people from a wide variety of industries meet to work on their projects. The following five values are particularly important:
Openness
Someone who only works behind closed doors in the coworking space has not fully understood the principle of coworking. For meetings and phone calls, retreating is not a thing, but most of the time should be spent in the open space. This is the only way that an exchange of ideas can lead to new inputs and exciting discussions.
Accessibility
Ideally, coworking spaces are located in a location that is very easy to reach thanks to a well-developed infrastructure. In addition, it should be as barrier-free as possible, coworking should be formulated in general terms, be accessible to everyone and have as few hurdles as possible.
Sustainability
Working in a coworking space is not only resource-saving thanks to the shared use of projectors, printers and the like, it is also good for the environment.
Collaboration
“Together we are strong” – In a coworking space, it is quite possible for complete strangers to meet, strike up a conversation and suddenly work on a joint project.
Community
The business collaborations that arise in the coworking space often extend to private life – friendships are formed and the sense of community in the office is strengthened.
Who uses coworking spaces?
According to a survey by Deskmag magazine, the average age of coworkers is 34 years. However, this innovative and flexible form of work is also preferred by significantly older people, because once the children are out of the house, the 50+ generation is more likely to get involved in a new work environment.
As far as gender is concerned, coworking is currently more of a male domain. According to the Deskmag study, only a third of all coworking space users are female. This means that the gender distribution in the coworking space roughly corresponds to the distribution of most self-employed and small business owners in Europe and the USA. But not everyone who uses a coworking space is also self-employed, around 20% of users are permanently employed in a company and use the coworking office to do their work.
Due to the resulting colorful mixture of different personalities, a coworking space is, so to speak, the best breeding ground for new business models and profitable ideas. The contacts gained here can not only advance your own business, but also lead to new orders and trustworthy partners.
Flexible rental conditions
The rental conditions typically found in coworking offices make the coworking spaces extremely attractive, especially for young companies and startups. They offer you a risk-free alternative to your own office. Because the workplaces located there can usually be rented by the day, week or month and are already fully equipped except for your own work material. So that there is no shortage of fun between the busy workload, many coworking spaces also offer break entertainment such as table tennis and table football.
Coworking makes you happy and successful
A French study provides further arguments in favor of coworking. The result, the employees of a company working in the coworking space for a few months, showed that 70% of the interviewed stated that they did their work more efficiently in the coworking space. 64% were happy about less stress and fatigue due to shorter travel times and 98% recommended that their colleagues do their work in a coworking space in the future.
Summary
Coworking not only saves costs and protects the environment, but also offers users an ideal place for networking. Numerous studies have shown that working in a shared office makes people happier and more satisfied and also increases creativity. So there are good reasons why the joint office will continue to be in great demand in the future.

Parallels to self-storage
Like coworking space, self-storage is a very modern form of renting. The parallels between the two types of rental are obvious: no long notice periods, flexible reduction or enlargement, low costs, short, flexible contract periods, for people of all ages, resources are conserved and the entire infrastructure is already in place.
Both self-storage and coworking will influence our rental habits in the future. Flexibility is a top priority for both models – just like in our modern society.
